On March 27, 2026, the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization (OahuMPO) welcomed the 4th cohort of the Hawaiʻi Transportation Project Management Training Program. This year, 33 new students will embark on an 8-month journey into better understanding federal funding requirements, project management, policies and procedures across all levels of government, and ways to improve project delivery.
As part of the first session, students hit the sidewalks, rolled on bicycles , and boarded the bus to Kekaulike Mall. Students learned more about Chinatown’s historic and bustling pedestrian marketplace, which was revitalized with the help of federal funding. They also received further insight into the construction of a nearby Skyline station.
Following the field trip, experts presented on the flow of funding and the State Transportation Improvement Program, which resulted in rich discussion.
Students ended the day by forming into groups, in which they’ll work together to propose a transportation project in the places and communities they care about.
This training program is funded in part through grants from the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration, U.S. Department of Transportation.
