The Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization has taken on the charge to act as the host for Hawaii’s participation in the #weekwithoutdriving challenge. This effort intends to provide an opportunity for car drivers to see from pedestrian, cyclist, and bus rider perspectives. Do you think you can do it? We know you can!
What is the Week Without Driving challenge?
The #WeekWithoutDriving challenge was launched in 2021 by Anna Zivarts at Disability Rights Washington. After two successful years, in 2023 in partnership with America Walks, they took the Week Without Driving national. More than 142 organizations across 41 states and the District of Columbia joined the challenge in 2023 and it is time for Hawaii to join the movement!
What is the goal?
The Week Without Driving challenge aims to draw attention to the difficulties faced by nondrivers in accessing our communities across the country and to inspire decision makers to address the barriers and gaps in our transportation system.
How do you participate?
You can get around however you want, but the challenge is not to drive yourself. This isn’t a disability simulation or a test of how easily you can find alternatives. Having to drive during the challenge does not signify failure. The point is to consider how someone without the option to drive have coped, and what choices they might have made.
Who should participate?
We’d love to see decision makers, community leaders, elected officials, and general car driving community members participate! Our hope is to create an opportunity to gain insight, inspire change, and push for statewide initiatives.

The OahuMPO will be organizing and coordinating the efforts for the region of Hawaii, meaning we will gather testimonials, arrange for interviews for those interested, and coordinate documenting our participation.
