(2015) Makakilo Traffic Study

Various safety concerns have been raised by the Makakilo community, including the Makakilo Drive Corridor.  Based on previous meetings with the Makakilo community, traffic safety concerns for Makakilo Drive expressed to the Department of Transportation Services have included: pedestrian crossing hazards, crash experiences, speeding, proper sight distances for certain sections, and on-street parking concerns.  As a result of these concerns, the community has suggested a wide range of improvements – including traffic signals, driver feedback signs, roundabouts, bulb-outs, rumble strips, etc.  A key purpose of this study will be to ascertain which traffic safety improvements, enforcement measures, and educational measures would be appropriate to address the traffic safety concerns that have been expressed by the community.  A comprehensive study to assess the existing and future conditions needs to be done to ascertain requirements for and mitigate congestion impacts of the current and future operations of the roadway system in the study area.
